Haphazard Musings of a Budding Academic

Well, I’m in Day 12 of Battle of the Plague, and the Plague finally won. In other words, I went to the doctor today. She fixed me up with some Cipro and a decongestant/expectorant to help thin, loosen, and dry up the waterworks in my nose, throat, and lungs. Because I’m married to a UA faculty member, I can go to the Faculty/Staff Clinic, which has a cheaper co-pay, no wait, and a private waiting room (w/ Internet access). I hadn’t intended to be so macho about being sick, but there just didn’t seem to be a good time. 23rd and 24th, I was in Spain. The 25th was Christmas, I was too sick to get out on the 26th, my dad came to visit on the 27th, I thought I was maybe getting better on the 28th, we drove to Missouri on the 29th. Sunday the 30th was Christmas w/ his folks, the 31st and 1st were holidays, the 2nd we drove back to Alabama, and so here I am today, nearly 2 weeks after getting sick, just now getting some medical attention. I’ll be glad not to be carrying around snotty Kleenex in my pocket like someone’s grandma or hacking like a pack-a-day smoker.

I bought an album by The Ditty Bops today…so far I really like it. I splurged a bit with my Christmas money and bought that album, a new wallet, and some clothes. The rest I’ll probably use to get my hair cut and whatever else comes up this month. It’s nice to have money again.

In other news, I ran over a live chicken today on my way back from Publix. Shudder…

I hope you get to feeling better soon!! When you do, I def. want to get together for lunch, dinner…something…before your semester gets too crazy :)

Aw, I love the Ditty Bops! “Angel With an Attitude” is my ringtone, even!

    Feel better!

    • I really like them, too. I heard them on XM a few times and said, “Hey, this is perfect driving music!” I bought their self-titled release, but may buy Moon Over the Freeway soon.

Who in that part of town has live chickens?! Where were you exactly? (I know y’all live near the Tuscaloosa Country Club, and I assume you were talking about the Publix next to campus since the other one is out toward Northriver…)

    -D.

Hope you feel better soon! The cough always seems to be the last thing to go…

    Chickens? WTF?!

  5. Even if I’m vegetarian?

  6. dromomanic Says:

That, besides being the joke, depends on your reason for your diet. The motives behind vegetarianism are as varied as its adherents, but if your objection to meat lies in the ethics of killing animals for our food, then I say hey, free chicken. No one profited from its death, it’s already dead anyway and it’s just going to waste sitting in the middle of the road. It would be unethical not to eat it.

This incident reminds me of those PSAs I hear on WREK once in a while. (From spotty memory) “Remember, when riding or biking through Cabbagetown, to slow down and look out for the wild chickens. The chickens live here too.” Freaking Cabbagetown.
