Haphazard Musings of a Budding Academic

I’ve been reading some good stuff lately (Namely, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which I humbly submit should be read by everyone) and I’ve seen some great movies (Volver and Delicatessen come to mind). I took Brubeck to the park on Sunday, and he was quite the naughty little boy. I think he needs more walks than he’s getting. For that matter, I need more walks than I’m getting. I haven’t been to the gym in a good while, mainly because I’m having some occasional cramping that doesn’t really make exercise sound like a great idea. Hopefully this will calm down soon.

We’re also planning our Spain trip, and for the most part we have all of our accommodations booked. In Madrid, we’re staying at a really cool hostel called Colors; in Cordoba, we’re staying at the Hospederia Duque San Martin (we decided to stay only one night in Cordoba and extend our stay in Seville, so now we’re staying at Hostal el Reposo de Bagdad.) in Seville, the Hostal Catedral; and in Granada, the Oasis. I’m really pumped about all of these places, especially given the prices (Colors was a bit pricey, but not astronomically so). It’s going to be a heck of a trip, and I’m so excited about all the things we’ll see, hear, smell, and taste.

I’m so sorry about your mom’s friend :(

I know how close your mom was to him, and my heart goes out to her and to his family. I am glad your mom is taking it so well.

And I’m sorry for posting this. I know you want me to leave you alone. But when I heard the news, I immediately thought of your mom, and I wondered how things were. That’s all; I’ll go away again now.

That really sucks that the creepy guy can’t take a hint…I can’t imagine how frustrating that must be. Are you sure a formal complaint wouldn’t go anywhere?

Everyone? That hardly seems fair. If I read your food book do I get to pick one for you?

Death pact is starting back up, so I probably won’t get to it for a while. Feel free to join us for that, though. Starts on the first, we’re doing Dostoevsky’s Demons this time.

    • What’s death pact?

      I’d like some Dostoevsky.

I guess I should include some backstory.

One of my friends from college, Chris Lumens, has long had an obsession with Gravity’s Rainbow. About all any of us knew about it was that it’s a bit long, a lot postmodern and has a reputation for being impossible to read. When Chris moved to New Hampshire we even bought him a copy, but he never got through the first thirty pages or so.

So back in May the pressure finally built to the point that Chris decided he was going to read that book if it killed him, and he was going to bring down as many other people as he could. So he started the Gravity’s Rainbow Death Pact, a sort of informal club where we all read the book and posted pictures on Flickr and wrote on blogs and all of those internety things.

We’re doing that again. Details at http://www.bangmoney.org/serendipity/index.php?/archives/99-Death-Pact-2!.html

We’ve got an RSS aggregator and everything now: http://dethpakt.bangmoney.org/ Web 2.0 something something. You can make a tag in LJ and email chris if you want to be included.

  6. I’m certainly trying, but I suspect there’s something “not right” about him (i.e., Asperger’s). I will definitely make it a point to be more direct and concrete, so that there is absolutely no doubt where my boundaries are.

  7. …for all 733 pages. :)

  8. dromomanic Says:

Heh, yeah. I figure it’ll be less bad than Gravity’s Rainbow, though. This book is just the normal kind of hard.

  9. What’s the address (Chris’, that is)? I subscribed to the feed and I’ll create an LJ tag.

chris@bangmoney.org. Or you can find him on the aolz as clumens.
