Haphazard Musings of a Budding Academic

I brought in most of the invitations (that I assembled last night) and had them all addressed by 10 AM. I guess it helps that I got here at 7:30 and had nothing else to do. I need to go to the post office to get them weighed to see if I can squeak by with a regular stamp or if I’m going to have to buy some of those ugly-ass 63 cent wedding stamps (with doves and swirls….ugh). I will have to wait a few days until the “forever” stamps go on sale so that I can put them on the response envelopes. Why the forever stamp, you ask? Because the postal rates are going up (AGAIN) on May 15. We’re mailing these suckers out next week with an RSVP date of June 1. That means (presumably) that some people will be mailing these in before the change, and others will mail them after. I could do it with a current stamp and a 2-cent supplement stamp, but those things are butt ugly (a Navajo necklace, which is completely not my style). The 41 cent stamps don’t go on sale until the day of the change, so waiting until then is definitely not an option. Sigh. This may sound kind of selfish, but what in the hell was the USPS thinking? Lots of people get married in May and June, and they send out a lot of invitations with the response card (which should be stamped, although the last few I’ve received haven’t been). Didn’t they realize that this would inconvenience a lot of people? I know they have a lot of things to work around (Valentine’s and Christmas), but couldn’t they have put it off until, I don’t know, the end of July?

I also wish they’d raise the rates by more than just 2 cents. You know they’ll just turn around in another year and raise it again. I wouldn’t mind a 10 cent increase, so long as that happened only every 10 years or so. They’re such a frustrating lot.

The invitations should be arriving tomorrow! I can’t wait to see how they look! I guess we all know what I’ll be up to for the next week or two. Sigh. I don’t mind it so much, since I have way better writing than Scott, but I hate repetition. I can address a few invites a day in between inane phone calls and pointless tasks. At least work has been somewhat low-key as of late, though I have a few projects and whatnot due in the next month before the end of the semester. Then I have a couple days off, then interim classes, which will be a beast (four hours a night, 4 days a week for two weeks). Then a few weeks of just working, and then I’m getting married. Gah!!! Where the hell did the time go?!

Here’s a proposal I’m considering sending in for an educational studies conference in October. The deadline is April 20. I appreciate any suggestions (ideas, grammar, spelling, etc.). The conference covers almost anything relatively related to education (cultural studies, foundations of education, sociology, technology studies, educational policy, etc.). Tell me what you think and also if this sounds like a paper presentation you’d enjoy attending. Thanks!

MySpace as Third Space

The current generation of adolescents (for our purposes, loosely defined as people born between 1987 and 1997) lives a greater portion of their lives online than any other generation preceding them. Recent articles and studies discuss issues such as acceptable use policies in educational settings, Internet safety, privacy, exhibitionism, voyeurism, anonymity and changes in interpersonal relationships among adolescents. For many in the general public, the popularity of MySpace, Facebook, blogging, and text messaging signal “the beginning of the end” of the interpersonal world as we know it. Many view this brave new world as dangerous, as we do not possess the same ,arguably delusional, sense of control as we do in the “real world.”

In my paper, I will argue that this virtual world acts as a third space for adolescents and can be developmentally helpful. Drawing on Bhabha (1994), I will compare the voices of adolescents to those of colonized peoples and emphasize the need for their thoughts to be heard in a context where preconceived notions of adolescence do not unnecessarily muffle their voices.

Well, I finished reviewing the article. Huge piece of crap, but at least I gave it a fair and honest review. I pointed out the strong ideological inconsistencies, the terrible organization, poor grammar, misuse of punctuation, and somebody who is trying to write beyond his (or her) vocabulary. Sigh. If this kind of crap can get published, then I am set for life. I should be an editor.
