Not really a whole lot to report on the weekend front. I had class Friday night and all day Saturday, which right away puts a damper on things. I had a presentation to give on Saturday (right before lunch) and I was so tired and hungry that I feel like I was at about 95% of what I could have been.Oh, well. I got home and felt extraordinarily sick. I took a long nap and still felt sick afterwards. I didn’t feel OK until about 7:30 that night. We didn’t go out or do much of anything, but considering we stayed out until 1:30 on Friday night, I don’t feel too lame. Sunday we woke up, went to Whole Foods and then to La Paz for lunch. I had forgotten how awesome that place is. Their verde salsa is unreal. The whole way there and back, I read articles for my upcoming presentation (on Wednesday) and paper (due next Wednesday). I feel like I have an articulate thesis and outline, so I should be OK. I have a lot of work coming up soon and I’m kind of nervous and overwhelmed right now. I know I’ll get it all done, but I feel like I have 80 million things to do and I’m afraid something will slip through the cracks. It’s just paranoia, I suppose. My life will be so much easier on May 9, when I turn in my last assignment for the semester.

I keep having “wedding gone wrong” dreams, and while they’re funny, they can be quite unsettling. I know I’m on task and ahead of schedule on a lot of things, but the thought of guests drinking warm soda out of styrofoam cups at the reception kind of makes me ill. Or the caterer putting out an all-meat hors d’oeuvres buffet. Or waking up the morning of the wedding with cystic acne (if you knew me, you’d know that’s pretty unlikely) and no vows written. Gah!

Two months and counting!!

As someone who works on a college campus, I’m a little freaked out today. As I walked through the building this morning, I thought “Where would I hide if some nutcase came through?” “Would it be safe to jump out the window (3 stories up)?” I can’t even imagine the horror of going through such an awful situation. I can’t even say anything like, “Today, we are all Hokies.” No, we aren’t and I sure as hell am not a Hokie. I feel for them and my heart goes out to the VT community, but I won’t for one second pretend that I can identify with their grief and fear. It’s like that bullshit after 9/11: “We’re all New Yorkers.” No, we didn’t have the largest structure in our city destroyed by terrorists. We didn’t have our friends and family killed simply for going to work that day. We didn’t live in constant fear that another building in town would get destroyed. I am as empathetic as anyone, but I won’t pretend I’m sympathetic. I’ve never had to endure something so terrifying, and I thank God that that’s the case.

This was the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. #2 and #3 happen to have been in Texas, which has a strong gun culture. I don’t find that to be coincidental. However, I don’t think any amount of gun control laws could have prevented this latest tragedy. This guy was sick and he apparently was hell-bent on going down and bringing others down with him. If it wasn’t a gun, it would have been something else. I just think the attitude we have in our culture of “any problem can be solved with a weapon” is sick and contributes to incidents like this.

Invites are out. Big check off the list there.

I went to the post office at 8:40 yesterday to get the “forever” stamps to put on the response cards. The clerk said “Oooooh, you’re the very first person to buy them here. I should go get my camera!!!” I politely declined that one. We discussed what stamps would be cool and I mentioned that we had thought about photo stamps, but decided it wasn’t worth the $$. She suggested using one of our wedding pictures as a photo stamp on our thank you cards. I’m definitely doing that. One of the few wedding-related ideas I’ve heard recently that wasn’t tacky and ridiculous.

Is it bad that I’m so excited to get those rsvp cards back in the mail? (They are all properly stamped, of course!)

ETA: We went with these and these.

Monday was a fucked up day, too. This is just my week of freaks, I guess.

Scott and I decided it would be cool to go ahead and list our faculty/staff tickets on eBay. Though we don’t physically have them in our hands yet (and won’t until August), lots of people auction their tickets off ahead of time and then send them when they arrive.

We listed them on Saturday afternoon. Sunday came, no bids. Sunday night, I got a message: “i’m interested in the tickets, can you give me a number where i can call you? i live in hamilton, al.” At first I was like “Oh, hell no!” but then we decided that we’d give him my work number.

BIG MISTAKE.

He called me Monday morning around 11 and was asking me to end the auction early and sell them to him for $1600 ($200 less than what I was asking…and everyone else, for that matter). I politely said, “No, I’m sorry, but it’s against eBay policy to do such a thing. I’m afraid you’ll just have to participate in the bidding process like everyone else. I wish you the best of luck.”

Then he pulls the “I’m a police officer” card on me. And asks if he can have a background check done on me before he buys the tickets. WTF?! I said that there was no way I’d agree to that because it’s an invasion of my privacy. I basically told him if he didn’t like it, he didn’t have to bid on my tickets and he could find them elsewhere.

After some discussion we decided to take the listing down, especially since Scott said they were lower level tickets and we really aren’t guaranteed that they will be. After the listing ended, Officer Freak sent me another message asking if I still had the tickets. And then he called me another 3 times at work. He would askĀ  “Who is this?” and I’d just say, “I’m sorry, with whom am I speaking?” He would then hang up.

I ended up calling the University Police to report the incident. Thus far he’s left me alone, but he had me freaked out for awhile.

As if Tuesday weren’t weird enough for me, something else happened last night. I noticed I hadn’t seen our cat Bruno all day long, which is so unlike him. He’s kind of in your face a lot when he wants affection, and to just not see him (or hear him) is really out of character. I worried that he somehow got out and then got lost, or that he had crawled somewhere hidden in the house and died. We launched a full scale search for him around the house and I went to look behind the sofa in the formal living room and found glass. Lots of it. At first I thought it was a broken trinket or picture frame, since the cats are always knocking stuff over, but then realized it was our front window. Next to the pile of glass was a golf ball.

Yes, we live on a golf course, but you have to be a damn bad shot to even get the ball into our front yard, much less through our window. The previous owners had only one ball come through the window in the 30 years they lived in the house. Scott checked and there was no note on the door or anything. I was really angry. He is down there right now talking to the people at the country club to see what can be done as far as getting us compensated, whether it’s from the country club itself or from tracking down the guilty party.

We were upset because we’re working so hard to save money for the wedding, and then something like this happens, where we have to shell out a couple hundred bucks for something that’s someone else’s fault. If you can afford to play golf at the country club, you can afford to fucking pay for our broken window. Right now I have a few layers of Saran wrap taped over the hole to keep bugs, moisture, etc. out of the house. It looks kind of tacky, but better that than an infestation of wasps and mosquitos!

Oh, and we found Bruno. He was hidden asleep in the linen closet on a navy blue blanket. :)
